Follow up from our March FX meeting

Last week at FX we were challenged and charged not to live our lives in unbelief, but to have faith for what God calls us to, because we have a great Savior.  Here are some follow up questions to help us think through these things.

Proposition:  The Living God says to us “Fear not!  Do not shrink back!  I Am with you!”  God means for us to live by faith, and He speaks to us to that end.

Ask yourself these questions:  In what areas of your life is the Lord calling you to remember, “The Lord is with me and He is my Shield and Defender and Rock and Fortress!  Look how He cares for me!  What will I fear if God is with me?”

Proposition:  Apart from believing in the Lord God Almighty and what He has to say about things, we will buy in to our own ill-informed conclusions.  And our conclusions are usually dictated by our own self-interests.  Perhaps, like the Israelites in the wilderness, we will be guided by self-preservation.  Out of fear for our own safety or comfort, or fear of what others might think of us, we shrink back from boldly doing what the Lord is calling us to do.

Questions:  Where do you find yourself being guided by something other than what the Lord calls you to through his revealed will?  Are you shrinking back from loving people because you are afraid of what others might think or do?  Are you shrinking back from taking the bold steps that God would have you take because you’re afraid it might go badly?  Where are you taking it upon yourself to be your own shield and defender, rock and fortress; instead of emptying yourself in love to others?

Proposition:  Unbelief is a serious issue because it functionally says this:  “I don’t trust God to follow Him and what He says.  He is less than what He claims, and I will follow my own plan.”  But faith leads our souls to rest.

Question:  Is your soul at rest, or is it anxious because it is seeking to find its own solutions to life’s questions and concerns?

Proposition:  What comfort to know that it isn’t merely up to me to turn from unbelief to faith!  The reason we can even think about holding fast to our confession is because we have a Great High Priest and King Who is on our side!  What confidence that inspires!

Questions:  How do the following WWII British propaganda posters speak to you when they are viewed through the lens of Christ and what He has done on your behalf?

“Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory”

“Keep Calm and Carry On”

“Freedom Is In Peril:  Defend It With All Your Might”

Application:  The danger for us is to fail to appreciate fully the story of the Israelites at the edge of the Promised Land so long ago.  It can seem so remote.  But in my life I must address unbelief, and cry out to God for faith.  I must run again and again to my Savior, Who has grace to give me that keeps me free.

Lastly, here is the video that tells the story of "Keep Calm and Carry On".
